Reported for U.S., Canada, and/or Greenland by Stotler and Crandall-Stotler (ABLS checklist, Bryologist 80: 405-428, 1977). Grows in loose patches on moist decaying logs and vertical rocks. Range is from Alaska to Labrador, south to California, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Minnesota, Illinois, Tennessee and Georgia.
Range Extent Comments
This species is endemic to western North America from British Columbia south to California and Nevada (Stotler and Crandall-Stotler, 2017).

This species is found on rotten wood in mesic areas in old growth forests (Wagner, 2009).
