Taxonomic Comments
Native to Old World; whether native anywhere in the New World seems debatable, but treated as native in some areas of the eastern USA (e.g., Fernald, Gray's Manual, 1950; also North Carolina), as well as the Caribbean (e.g., Jamaica). LEM 11Nov94. Alan Weakley (draft Carolinas flora, 1996) concludes that this species is Old World, and was introduced very early to North America. Faden (FNA, review draft 5/98) considers even var. gigas as presumably introduced.
