Taxonomic Comments
Stotler and Crandall-Stotler (2017) here narrow the concept of Cephalozia bicuspidata by elevating C. bicuspidata ssp. otaruensis (= C. hamatiloba) and C. bicuspidata ssp. ambigua (= C. ambigua) to full species level and not recognizing C. bicuspidata ssp. bicuspidata and C. bicuspidata ssp. lammersiana as distinct infraspecies.

Range Extent Comments
This species is transcontinental in the high Arctic to the taiga, into the deciduous forest of North America from Alaska to Greenland south to Georgia and west to Kansas and Colorado to California. It is also in high elevations from Mexico to Colombia, and is very common in northern Europe to North Africa and also in Asia. Schuster (1974: 715) discounted the reports from Florida (Stotler and Crandall-Stotler, 2017).
