Rank Reasons
Cladonia cryptocholorophaea occurs on soils, rocks, bases of trees, stumps, old woods, logs and on mosses on roadsides, open woods. It is found throughout most of the eastern United States and Canada. (Flenniken 1999). However, chemical tests are required to separate C. chlorophaea, C. cryptocholophaea, C. grayi, and C. merochlorophaea, according to recent work by Paula DePriest (c.f. Flenniken 1999).
