Primarily in Nevada and southern Idaho, but also occurs in southeastern Oregon, western Utah, and northwestern Arizona. Large colonies form when conditions are optimum (Barneby 1964).

This taxon grows in seleniferous, saline clay and silty soils, barren calcareous clay banks, sandy shale or clay bluffs and knolls, in mixed desert shrub and grass communities and desert shrub communities, often with shadscale, bursage, greasewood, and matchweed, especially in selenium-rich soils (Barneby 1964, FNA 2023).
