Taxonomic Comments
This record represents the broad concept of Polygonum aviculare following FNA (vol. 5, 2005) that includes taxa that Kartesz (1994, 1999) treats as distinct species. This treatment used by Costea and Tardif (2003) and FNA (vol. 5, 2005) recognizes the following subspecies in P. aviculare: P. aviculare ssp. aviculare (= P. aviculare), P. aviculare ssp. boreale (= P. boreale), P. aviculare ssp. buxiforme (= P. buxiforme), P. aviculare ssp. depressum (=P. arenastrum), P. aviculare ssp. neglectum, and P. aviculare ssp. rurivagum. In contrast, Kartesz (1994, 1999) recognize P. aviculare, P. arenastrum, P. bellardii, P. boreale, P. buxiforme, and P. franktonii.
