Taxonomic Comments
The naturalized North American material of Populus nigra, the European black poplar, is often called Populus nigra var. italica but is perhaps better treated taxonomically as a cultivar [Populus nigra 'Italica'], since it represents a one-time variant (with columnar growth form) of the species, found as a single tree in the Lombardy region of Italy several centuries ago, and propagated as cuttings.
